LONG VERSION

Imagine a song in its purest form - melody and harmony, as it would appear in a lead sheet:

What takes this to the next level?

Many factors do, including the performance, the recording, and the arrangement.

For example: what style of rhythm will be used? What instrumentation? What kind of intro and accompaniment? Perhaps a solo? Who decides? Does the arrangement succeed, or does it just bore you? Does another artist do the song better? Why?

Music, as you know, is an art of balancing contrast with repetition. Much of popular song form relies on repetition. So how do you build excitement over a song that repeats itself?

Intro-Climax-Outro celebrates the songs that answer this question. It spans genres, from the vocal pop of Doris Day to the electronic ditties of Mort Garson (as well as the songs Mort Garson arranged for Doris Day!).

And at the end of the day, the music is usually heaven to the ears.
